TUSCANY, THROUGH THE CAMERA'S LENS
Travel and Landscape Photography in the Southern Tuscan Countryside With Mark Preu September 26-October 3, 2010
Since the time of the Etruscans, followed by the Romans, through Medieval times to the Renaissance, this area has been under human influence. Come with me as we explore this fascinating area. We will be using modern methods to capture the timeless beauty of the Tuscan landscape and the history and culture of historic hill towns. Based at Fattoria La Palazzina, located in the town of Radicofani, there will be daily trips to nearby places of interest, and an overnight trip to Monte Argentario on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Our time predominantly will be spent creating images, with time most days for review and critiques of our results. There will be instruction on visualizing, capturing, and assembling panoramas. We will also learn about high dynamic range photography (HDR), a method of taking several photos that are identical except for camera settings, then combining them to capture a range of light values never possible with film. This course will be most beneficial to beginning and intermediate digital photographers, but will also welcome advanced photographers. Keep in mind that we will be visiting hill towns. There will be walking and step climbing so keep your gear choices light. Tripods are not welcome in many buildings and even some small towns, but you may use them where possible. In addition to your camera gear, it is recommended that you bring a laptop- with an Italian power plug adaptor- for use at La Palazzina. This will enable you to work with your images, and select those you choose to share. I use PC based software, with Photoshop Lightroom being the primary program. I will demonstrate making panoramas using Arcsoft Panorama Maker 5, but other programs may be used, including Photoshop Elements. Photomatix Pro will be used for HDR. Please do not forget your camera manual!
