Outside in the Cape Cod air, all our senses come alive and this sense of immediacy and experience is translated onto the canvas. We will paint on land and have the delightful additional experience of climbing aboard a boat for a trip to an island in Pleasant Bay. Here we will disembark, enjoy the view and set up to sketch, breaking for a picnic lunch on the beach.
With the landscape before us, we will learn how to approach painting outdoors with emphasis on the fundamentals of design in composition. In a congenial atmosphere the workshop will stress: simplifying designs in order to develop skills and achieve successful plein air paintings, learning how to see values and color harmony, mixing colors and using color temperatures to create space.

Price: $700 includes instruction for 3 days, accommodation at The Cove in Orleans (d.o.; check-in on August 7), 1 dinner and 1 picnic lunch, sailing trip, and admin fees. For those not needing accommodations, the price is $425. Upgrades at The Cove may be available.
Register by calling Joan Hill at 508-255-7907 or 774-487-0650 before July 21, 2012. Deposit: $250.

JOAN BRANCA

Responding to the natural world, Joan Branca translates the intensity of this experience into painterly canvases filled with energetic and colorful brushstrokes. Whether along the shore of the Atlantic in Cape Cod, Maine or Long Island Ms. Branca fixes in paint her experience of light, color and place. Working both "en plein air" and in her studio, her paintings invite the viewer to observe the rhythms of life in all seasons.
Ms. Branca's artwork is represented in private, corporate, and public collections in the United States and abroad. She has been a NY Artist- in- Residence and a recipient of a painting fellowship through the NY Foundation on the Arts. Ms. Branca has received numerous grants and awards for her paintings and exhibits her work in several galleries. She lives on the north shore of Long Island where the natural beauty of the local landscape is a constant source of inspiration. Her image of a late fall harvest at Jamesport Vineyards of Long Island graces the Fall/Winter cover of the Long Island Wine Press magazine.
She received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture where she studied with many of the contemporary masters of painting.
