with Andrew DeVries October 7-17, 2010
Sculptor Andrew DeVries resides in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. An award winning sculptor and master founder, he also operates his own gallery, DeVries Fine Art International, Inc., in the historic district of Lenox. Andrew was the sculptor in residence at the Chesterwood Museum from 1996 to 2003, as well as at Ventfort Hall in 2003 and 2004. Andrew’s sculpture is collected internationally. His work, “The Chariot,” was selected for the Society’s first international exhibition in Serravezza, Italy in 1994. Three of his sculptures were also selected to be in the 2003 Florence Biennale.
Andrew’s tour, with 4 days in Florence and 5 days in southern Tuscany, will provide participants with a unique perspective into the history of Italian sculpture, following and examining Italian working methods from past to present. With a fresh approach, Andrew will give informal talks about the influence of Italian sculptors on the world of art through the ages, and insights on the effect these artists have had on American sculpture. The food, wine, and culture of Tuscany will also delight and enchant. As a participant of the tour, you will meet with local artists and artisans, and become fully immersed in the treasures that only Italy has to offer. Tentative scheduling includes a five day tour of Tuscany through Etruscan ruins, Romanesque and Gothic architecture and sculpture, the Duomos of Florence and Orvieto, and the city’s other underground treasures, and decadent dining. Enjoy a refreshing change of pace and intimate journey into the history of sculpture and Italy.
